*No Request From PAS To Enforce Islamic Laws In Penang, Says CM*
PENANG, June 15 (Bernama) — The state government has not received any
request from PAS to discuss plans to implement Islamic laws in the
state, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Sunday.
“Neither has the Penang PAS discussed with us on plans to enforce
Islamic laws nor has the state government received any request from them
to meet us on the matter,” he told reporters.
Therefore, he said, there was no reason for the state government to
discuss the matter with any quarters including de facto leader of Parti
Keadilan Rakyat Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“What’s clear is that Pakatan Rakyat never raised the issue when we
wanted to form the People’s Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat),” said Lim, who is
also DAP secretary-general, when responding to PAS National Youth deputy
chief Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani’s statement yesterday that the wing was
drawing up an agenda to implement Islamic laws in the five
opposition-held states.
Lim, however, said as a fair and just state government, it was prepared
to hear the views from all groups regardless of race, religion and their
political agendas.
The chief minister said although the Pakatan Rakyat’s organisational
structure was still incomplete, the coalition had a secretariat to
streamline operational procedures in states under the Pakatan Rakyat
administration.
Azman had said a committee has been set up to discuss in greater detail
implementation of Islamic laws in Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and
Selangor.
He said a seminar to discuss the matter among PAS youth members from
throughout the country would be held in August.

PAS YOUTH SUGGESTS ISLAMIC LAW BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL PAKATAN RAKYAT-RULED STATES
Bernama – Sunday, June 15 2008
KOTA BAHARU, June 14 (Bernama) — PAS Youth is organising a seminar in August to discuss the possibility of implementing Islamic law in all Pakatan Rakyat-ruled states.
Its deputy chief, Azman Shapawi Abdul Rani, said a committee would be formed to study the proposal on the implementation of Islamic law in Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor.
“We are aware that it is not going to be easy in states like Penang and Perak where PAS is a minority but we will push for it,” he told reporters after opening the Kelantan PAS Youth annual meeting here today.
He said the proposed implementation of Islamic law would not be detrimental to people of other beliefs and that enforcement of the law would be in relation to imposing a ban on gambling, restricting sale of liquor and introduction of dress code for office workers.
Azman Shapawi believed that the proposed implementation of Islamic law would not affect the good relations between PAS and other parties in Pakatan Rakyat (People’s Alliance).

PAS-SYARIAH 2 (LAST) KOTA BAHARU
He said Pakatan Rakyat parties were aware that under present circumstances, none of them could be strong on their own.
“PAS cannot move on its own, neither can DAP nor Parti Keadilan Rakyat in Selangor. All of us have to support each other,” he added.

BN GOVERNMENT HAD LONG IMPLEMENTED “SIASAH SYARIAH” – AHMAD ZAHID
Bernama – Sunday, June 15
SEMENYIH, June 14 (Bernama)– The Barisan Nasional (BN) government had long implemented the Siasah Syariah (Islamic Law) without giving it a proper terminology, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“Our country is multi-racial and multi-religious, and we have to consider the rights of other religions in implementing the Syariah law,” he told Bernama after launching Zey sport bike shop here today.
He was commenting on the Pas Youth plan to implement the Siasah Syariah in the five Opposition-led states.
Ahmad Zahid said the state governments should not differentiate Islamic rules and regulations based on the state’s leading party as it would only cause problems.
“They must understand that Islamic affairs in the country is under the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s jurisdiction, while in the state, it is under the Malay Ruler’s,” he said.
